Ireland's Nicolas Roche finished second on the fifth and final stage of the Tour of the Alps.

The Team DSM rider was 34 seconds off stage winner Felix Grosschartner of Austria who finished in a time of 3:03:38 on the 120.9km route between Idro and Riva del Garda.

After the stage which lifted him to 43rd overall, Roche told the Team DSM website: "I'm really happy about today. It was nice to be in the break with Michael (Storer) and it was proper racing out there.

"After the last climb (third-placed stage finisher Alessandro) De Marchi and myself believed we could still make it before the bunch to the line. It was nice that we both just committed to that in the finale and didn’t play around. I’m happy with the result and to be able to get a stage podium for the guys."

Fellow Irish rider Dan Martin, who suffered a setback on stage four after a late crash, finished Friday's fifth stage 74 seconds down on Grosschartner, having got himself back into the peloton with 22km to go.

Great Britain's Simon Yates was the overall winner for Team BikeExchange, claiming the Tour victory by 58 seconds ahead of Pello Bilbao of Spain.

Martin finished 15th overall, 4:35 behind Yates.

The latter was using the race as his final warm-up for the Giro d'Italia, which begins in Sicily in two weeks' time.

"It's really fantastic," the 28-year-old said of his win. "The team did a great job today, they really controlled the start and rode all day and in the final were fantastic again.

"It was a short day, there wasn't so much action in the (general classification) but it was a really hard day with a lot of stress in the peloton and with that fast descent to the finish it was always nervous.

"I feel good. Now I just need to look after myself, try not to get sick, and take it from there."
