Primož Roglič took a commanding victory on the second stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné on a day where Daniel Martin plummeted down the classification after a heavy fall.

Roglič, one of the favourites for victory coming into the five-day event, attacked 650 metres from the top of the Col de Porte and crossed the line ahead of Thibaut Pinot and Bora-Hansgrohe's Emanuel Buchmann.

The Slovenian has a 12-second lead over Pinot in the general classification, with Buchman a further two seconds adrift.

Last year's Tour de France champion Egan Bernal and a leading contender for victory remains within striking distance in fourth place, 16 seconds behind Roglic.

It was a day to forget for Irish rider Martin, as he found himself in a crash within the peleton on the flat road to the base of Porte.

The Israel Start-Up Nation cyclist, along with Sergio Higuita, hit the deck and required medical attention before getting back to their bikes, coming in more than 25 minutes after the stage winner.

It was a better afternoon for Nicolas Roche, who lies 26th overall, two minutes and 37 seconds adrift of Roglic.
