Sam Bennett won the the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Burgos in dramatic fashion on Friday evening, narrowly avoiding a crash late on before executing a perfectly timed attack to steal it.

The Deceuninck-QuickStep rider came home ahead of Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) and Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT Pro Cycling) for the 45th win of his pro career.

He's now just four victories off Stephen Roche's record haul for an Irishman.

Bennett had to show nerves of steel to do it, swerving a collision involving his team-mate Michael Morkov and Jacopo Guarnieri (Groupama-FDJ) heading into the final kilometre into Roa de Duero in northern Spain.

He peeled away from the chasing pair thereafter to take the stage and with it the points leader's green jersey.

Bennett is 110th in the general classification with another of his team-mates, Remco Evenepoel, leading overall.
