Dan Martin finished second overall at the Tour of the Basque Country as Ion Izagirre ended the final stage with the yellow jersey.
A five-man breakaway on the category one climb up Azurki saw overnight leader Emanuel Buchmann drop back heading into the final 65 kilometres.
Ireland's Dan Martin looked to pull clear from Astana rider Izagirre over the final ascent of Asensio, but was unable to gain any distance.
Britain's Adam Yates, meanwhile, made his move heading into the final three kilometres, going on to secure the stage win for Mitchelton-Scott by a second ahead of Team Emirates rider Martin with Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) in third.
Buchmann had appeared set to close up and be in contention for a place on the podium before being part of the group which was mistakenly sent down the deviation for race vehicles during the closing kilometre.
The German managed to recover some time, but could only finish one minute and 36 seconds behind Yates, which resulted in the Bora-Hansgrohe rider dropping down to fourth in the general classification standings.
But Buchmann was later bumped up to third in the final classification from the race organisers.
That dropped Fuglsang to fourth overall, with Martin finishing as runner-up, 29 seconds behind Izagirre, while Yates was fifth.
