A sixth-place finish on final stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné ensured Ireland’s Dan Martin finished in fourth place overall with Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas taking the spoils.
Thomas survived two punctures and several late attacks to claim victory, one minute ahead of stage winner Adam Yates on the 136km stage from Moutiers to Saint-Gervais-Les Bains-Mont Blanc
The Welshman struggled in the final kilometre of the final mountain stage as Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) attacked but he was able to make a measured effort and hold onto victory.
Martin had slipped down general standings after his team lost time on stage three, but a second-place finish on Thursday’s climbing stage, a stage victory on Friday after a well executed attack and yesterday’s third-place finish saw the 31-year-old turn his fortunes right around.
He was less than a minute behind Romain Bardet in third and two and a half minutes behind race winner Thomas.
