Ireland's Robert John McCarthy was the winner of Stage 2 of the Rás Tailteann from Athlone to Tipperary.

A bunched finish under grey skies saw McCarthy take the 148.70 long stage from Luuc Bugter of the Netherlands and Belgium's Lindsay De Vylder.

Swiss rider Cyrille Thiery, who won yesterday's opening stage, maintains the lead in general classification after Day 2.

He's currently ten seconds clear of Dutchman Bugter in second spot. Ireland's Damien Shaw, who came home in 41st place today, is third overall.

Today's stage winner McCarthy shoots into 11th spot in general classification.

Stage 3 tomorrow sees the riders head for Listowel in Co. Kerry.
