Sam Bennett’s rollercoaster Tour of Turkey ended in heartache on Sunday as a crash on the second last corner cost him a fifth stage victory and the overall points classification.
Bora-hansgrohe's lightning Irish sprinter had won four of the first five stages, though he finished almost 15 minutes down on the winner in Friday's uphill fourth stage and thus was not in contention to top the General Classification.
The sprinter's jersey was certainly attainable though, and he looked on course to clinch it as the peloton rode into Istanbul.
He was third taking the corner and attempted to overtake Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo), who was seven points behind him on the points classification before the final stage.
Bennett's wheels skidded on slick paving and he tumbled out of the race and out of contention.
To rub salt into the wounds, Theuns went on to win the stage and take the points classification.
The Belgian collected 68 points to Bennett’s 60, enough for second.
Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) was the overall winner, 12 seconds ahead of Jesper Hansen (Astana). Fausto Masnada (Androni-Sidermec-Bottecchia) was third another 12 seconds back.
