Gorka Izagirre climbed to victory in the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia after attacking from the breakaway on the 189km-stage through Puglia.
The Movistar rider pulled clear from the group of four to win by five seconds from Bahrein-Merida's Giovanni Visconti.
Astana's Luis Leon Sanchez was third, 10 seconds further adrift, and the fourth rider of the group Valerio Conti of UAE-Emirates crashed taking a corner.
Race leader Bob Jungels finished safely in the middle of the pack to retain the Maglia Rosa, six seconds ahead of Britain's Geraint Thomas and 10 clear of Adam Yates.
"The stage was very hard. I took the breakaway. The average speed was very high. [Giovanni] Visconti was probably the most dangerous rival for the stage victory in the front group," said Izagirre.
"I'm very happy that I won. I got an opportunity and I'm glad I didn't miss it."
