Turvey 28th in the heat of Doha at World Championships

Ireland’s Anna Turvey has finished in 28th place in the time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in a scorching Doha.

Turvey clocked 40 minutes 51.89 seconds as 41-year-old Amber Neben of the United States belied her years to win gold, covering the 28.9-kilomeTurvey 28th at World Ctre course in 36:37.04 as the mercury hit 39C in the Qatari capital.

Ellen van Dijk of the Netherlands was six seconds adrift of Neben in second, while Australia’s Katrin Garfoot completed the podium places in 36:45.36.

Turvey became Irish champion in June at the first attempt after switching allegiances from the British team last year. 

Ronan Tuomey and Xeno Young were 42nd and 43rd in the junior time trial.

Brandon McNulty of the United States was crowned world champion as he clocked 34:42.29. 

Denmark’s Mikkel Bjerg crossed the line in second, with McNulty’s compatriot Ian Garrisson back in third.

Tuomey was 3:39.89 behind the overall winner, with Young just under a second further back.
