Ireland's Nicolas Roche will not feature in this year's Tour de France after being left off the Team Sky squad for the three-week Grand Tour.

Roche, son of former Tour winner Stephen, has taken part in the Tour de France every year since 2009, finishing in 12th in 2012.

Roche was recently named as one half of Ireland's team for the road race at the Rio Olympics.

The 31-year-old also finished in 24th place overall in this year's Giro d'Italia.

However, he has not been included in the nine-man Sky squad which is headed by Chris Froome.

The Kenyan-born cyclist is seeking a third Tour title in four years and is backed up by a strong team for the event, which begins on 2 July.

Welsh pair Luke Rowe and Geraint Thomas are joined by Englishman Ian Stannard to give the side a rather British feel.

Spanish duo Mikel Landa and Mikel Nieve will provide plenty of climbing support, as will Colombian Sergio Henao and Dutchman Wout Poels, with Belarusian time-trial specialist Vasil Kiryienka picked for his all-round ability.

Donegal's Philip Deignan, who also competed in the Giro for Sky, was also not selected.

Irish hopes for the event now rest on Roche's cousin Dan Martin, who is also the other half of Ireland's Olympic road race squad, and Sam Bennett.

Etixx–Quick-Step rider Martin finished third in the recent Criterium du Dauphine, a good pre-Tour indicator won by Froome.

Bennett, who rides for Bora-Argon, also enjoyed a number of top-ten finishes in the Dauphine and the 25-year-old will be competing in his second Tour.
