Team LottoNL-Jumbo's Steven Kruijswijk has out-climbed the favourites to claim the lead in the Giro d'Italia.
The Dutchman finished second on stage 14 to Colombia's Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge), who out-sprinted his rival, but Kruijswijk managed to take ownership of the pink jersey and enjoys a 41-second lead ahead of Italy's Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), the 2013 winner.
BMC Racing's Darwin Atapuma seemed destined for a win having led the day's break but the Colombian was caught just before the final kilometre of the 210km stage which included six climbs.
Chaves moved into third overall, one minute 32 behind Kruijswijk, as overnight leader Andrey Amador and his Movistar team leader Alejandro Valverde fell over three minutes behind.
Kruijswijk told Eurosport: "I came here with big ambitions to go for a good (general classification) result but getting the pink jersey is something else. I can't believe it but I'm really happy."
The day was also a happy one for Chaves, who said: "To win a stage at the Giro d'Italia was my dream since I started my pro career."
Ireland’s Nicholas Roche finished the stage in 24th, just over eight minutes down on the winner.
