Ireland’s Dan Martin consolidated his fourth place in the Volta a Catalunya after Team Sky’s Wout Poels claimed victory in today’s fifth stage of the race.
Dutchman Poels claimed a solo win after breaking clear of his breakaway companions to win.
Martin, who won Wednesday’s stage, began the day 24 seconds off leader Nairo Quintana and took three seconds off the Colombian’s advantage after finishing in 10th position on the stage.
Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador trails Quintana by seven seconds with BMC's Richie Porte in third position. Chris Frrome lies in eight position, 46 seconds adrift of the Movistar rider.
Martin, now riding under the Etixx-QUick Step banner, is a previous winner of the Volta.
