Ireland’s women’s squad have qualified eighth in a new national record time in the team pursuit on the first day of action at the European Track Championships in Switzerland.

The Irish quartet of Lydia Boylan, Josie Knight, Caroline Ryan and Mel Spath reduced the previous benchmark by 4.372 seconds as they stopped the clocks in four minutes 35.090 seconds to qualify for Thursday’s first round. Ireland will face Germany in the second heat this morning.

In the men’s pursuit, the Ireland team of Mark Downey, Felix English, Fintan Ryan and Martyn Irvine also lowered the national record to 4:11.539 as they finished 14th.

Martyn Irvine will ride the men’s scratch race this evening, while Josie Knight will ride in the women’s points race.
