Britain's Chris Froome powered into contention to win the Criterium du Dauphine with a superb victory in the penultimate stage.

The Team Sky rider climbed from seventh to second overall as he broke away from American Tejay van Garderen to win the 155km seventh stage from Montmelian to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc.

Froome finished 17 seconds clear of his nearest challenger, while van Garderen's effort was good enough to see him take the overall lead and yellow jersey from Vincenzo Nibali.

Tour de France champion Nibali had a day to forget, coming in almost four minutes behind and slumping to 11th in the general classification, three minutes five seconds off the lead.

Ireland’s Dan Martin finished 13th on the stage despite suffering a flat tyre. The Cannondale-Garmin rider is eight overall, almost two and a half minutes off the lead.

Van Garderen has an 18-second lead over Froome going into Sunday's 156.5km final stage from Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc to Modane Valfrejus.

Froome told ITV4: "I really couldn't be happier because the guys really emptied themselves there. The guys rode fantastically today so I can't thank them enough.

"Tejay's ridden a really good race, so definitely I've got a bit to make up on him still - but I guess the race isn't over until it's over."

Spain's Benat Intxausti Elorriaga is third overall and Portugal's Rui Alberto Costa fourth, with another Brit, Orica Greenedge rider Simon Yates, in fifth.
