Romain Bardet won stage five of the Criterium du Dauphine in the Alps today.
Daniel Martin finished 11th, 1'03 behind Bardet, with his cousin Nicolas Roche 17 seconds further back in 13th.
Philip Deignan was 85th, a full 13:38 back.
Frenchman Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) finished first on the 161-kilometres route from Digne-les-Bains to Pra-Loup, with Roche's Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome accelerating with two kilometres to go in an effort to bridge the gap.
The route was the same as the peloton will negotiate on July 22 on stage 17 of the Tour de France and Bardet accelerated on the descent before the final climb, giving himself enough of an advantage to hold off Froome and company.
Froome, the 2013 Tour de France champion, finished 40 seconds behind in third after being passed by American Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing) in the finale.
Van Garderen moved into the overall lead, but Froome is within striking distance at 41 seconds behind in fifth place.
Martin is eighth overall, 1'08 behind Van Garderen. Roche lies tenth, 18 seconds further back. Deignan is 104th on 24'03.
The race finishes on Sunday.
"It was definitely an eventful stage," Froome said on cyclingnews.com.
"It's a good feeling to be back in the mountains again and this is what we've trained for and this is what the racing is all about for us.
"The team did a fantastic job today; they took it on, on the penultimate climb and made it really hard.
"I was third today, of course I would have preferred to go one or two better but I'm happy with the feelings."
