Australian Jack Bobridge fell short in his attempt at cycling's hour record in Melbourne on Saturday.
Bobridge was attempting to beat Austrian Matthias Brandle's mark for the furthest distance ridden in a velodrome in 60 minutes of 51.852 kilometres.
But the 25-year-old from Adelaide, who broke Chris Boardman's long-standing 4km individual pursuit world record in 2011, could only ride 51.3km.
The hour record has been revived since regulation changes by the UCI, cycling's world governing body, and Bobridge was the third man to take it on after Jens Voigt and Brandle.
The Australian is the first to fail to better the existing mark.
His compatriot Rohan Dennis will bid for the record on 8 February.
Briton Alex Dowsett postponed his attempt, which had been scheduled for 27 February, due to a broken collarbone, while Bradley Wiggins is likely to bid for the mark in June.
