Roche stays solid in Volta ao Algarve

Ireland's Nicolas Roche has maintained his 11th place in the overall standings at the Volta ao Algarve GC after a solid performance on stage four.

Roche finished in the main peloton in 31st place alongside fellow Irishman Philip Deignan who was 56th.

Germany's Gerald Ciolek claimed victory on what is the penultimate stage. His teammate Matteo Trentin finished in second while Heinrich Haussler was third in the 186km stage.

The trio were among a group of ten riders who broke clear just 25km into the hilly terrain. However, Team Sky lead a charge to chase down the pack and succeded, proctecting the lead of Richie Porte.

Porte maintains the overall lead ahead of Sunday's final stage, a 25.8km time trial from Lagoa to Portimão.

The Team Sky race is still 12 seconds ahead of Tiago Machado, with Rui Costa a further two seconds back.

Ronan McLoughlin finished 96th and is 120th overall. Conor McConvey did not finish stage four and retired from the race.
