Richie Porte claimed the third stage of the Volta ao Algarve, while Nocolas Roche remained in contention moving up to 11th place overall in Portugal.
AG2R La Mondiale rider Roche finished 44 seconds behind the stage winner and now sits 54 seconds off the leader with two stages remaining.
Philip Deignan moved up to 30th in the overall standings, 1min 39secs behind race leader Porte.
Ronan McLaughlin was part of an early break but were brought back to the peloton later in the stage. McLaughlin eventually finished over 20 minutes behind the stage winner alongside Conor McConvey.
Both McLaughlin and McConvey now sit more than 20 minutes off the race leader, while Deignan and Roche will both consider themselves within striking distance of landing the Algarve title.
