An Post Sean Kelly team manager Kurt Bogaerts is in optimistic mood ahead of a series of important races, after a terrific start to the season by his team.

Experienced Belgian rider Niko Eeckhout put in an excellent performance in the Dwars door Vlaanderen two weeks ago after placing a fine second in the 1.1 race. Eeckhout went close to taking a memorable victory at the race but he was outsprinted by Kevin Van Impe (Quick Step) at the end of the 200 kilometre event, crossing the line two seconds back.

This result, with the season commencing in February, has been the highlight of a positive opening to the season for the An Post team, and Bogaerts is confident that his team can continue this vein of form.

'The first part of the year has been very successful', Bogaerts said.

'Niko has set a very high standard now – his second place a few weeks ago at the Dwars door Vlaanderen was a great result, which highlighted the team, as he was prominent on TV coverage, so this was good for the sponsors as well. It was a strong field so we were very happy with the result.

'Niko has the experience. The others use their energy and help Niko. If Niko comes second place in an important race, it is because the other team members have worked hard early on to allow him to get this position. This is where the importance of the team is.

'Jef (Peeters) also had a second place this year already, so we have good results. We have important stage races in Spain coming up and we will return to Ireland first for the Rás in May and then for the Tour of Ireland. I am very happy with the opening part of the season, but our tactics will change greatly now for these upcoming races.

'This year has been a big improvement at this point from last season, when we had no big result by this stage, but this year we have some really promising results already.

'I am very optimistic and relaxed and everything is going well. I hope we can continue this form now for the big races ahead and have a major impact this year.'

The An Post Sean Kelly team will not compete at the Rás Mumhan this weekend, but will return home to make their first appearance on Irish soil this season at next month’s FBD Rás.
