Taking the time bonuses up for grabs at two intermediate sprints, David McCann today jumped from tenth to third in the overall standings of the Tour of Hainan in China.

The Giant Asia rider nabbed the time at the second and third sprints held during the 159.4 kilometre race from Xinglong to Wenchang and was clear in the lead before easing back prior to the mass bunch sprint to the line. He rolled home 89th on the stage, and was classified in the same time as winner Boris Shpilevsky (Russian National Team).

McCann is now 24 seconds behind Shpilevsky in the general classification, and just one second behind Brad Huff (Jelly Belly), who is second overall.

A delighted McCann said afterwards: ‘The bonuses proved significant last year so I am happy to have taken some time early on.’
