Two Irish riders will be eligible to line out in the Elite road race at next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing, the UCI confirmed today.
The UCI has released details of the places obtained via the ProTour and Continental Tour rankings and under that criteria, Ireland will have two berths in the road race.
Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and the USA each get the maximum of five, with a total of 145 entrants for the competition.
Ireland has not met the qualification criteria for the time trial. Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and the USA can enter two; in all, 40 riders will dispute that event.
The places available for women will be decided on May 31.
Ireland has already secured a place in the Elite Men's Mountain Bike cross country race. Irish riders are hoping to qualify for at least one track event and will thus be aiming to perform strongly in the forthcoming World Cups.
