Russian Vladimir Efimkin surprised the favourites in the Tour of Spain to take both the stage win and the overall lead in the race's first summit finish today.
Part of a day-long break of 35, the Caisse D'Epargne rider attacked 10 km from the finish at the Lakes of Covadonga for a solo victory.
Italian Leonardo Piepoli finished second and Belgian Stijn Devolder took third, both crossing the line in a small group around one minute six seconds behind the Russian.
Efimkin heads the overall standings from compatriot Denis Menchov, and Spaniard Carlos Sastre.
