Italy's Paolo Bettini won the men's world road cycling crown on the final day of the world road cycling championships in Salzburg, Austria on Sunday.

Bettini, the reigning Olympic champion who rides for Quick Step, dominated a two-man sprint to hold off German veteran Erik Zabel.

Zabel finished second with Spaniard Alejandro Valverde of Spain in third over two bikes lengths behind.

Bettini had previously set the record for the most number of World Cup race wins in a single season in 2003.

David McCann was the sole Irish finisher after Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan withdrew in the dying laps.

McCann came in 6 mins and 24 secs off the winner.
