Giant Asia professional David McCann became the first Irishman to take three national road race championship titles today in Westport, overcoming Ciarán Power, David O’Loughlin and Paídi O’Brien to win the 175 kilometre race.
McCann attacked near the finish and, showing the strength which has earned him four Irish time trial championship titles, opened up a near three minute lead over Power and O’Brien by the finish.
Nicolas Roche, son of Stephen, was fourth, with O’Loughlin finishing just behind O’Brien’s team-mate Tim Cassidy in taking sixth.
