Italy's Leonardo Piepoli has won the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Alessandria to the ski resort of La Thuile.
The Saunier Duval rider attacked on the descent of the Colle San Carlo climb, 6.5kms from the finish, and crossed the line 44 seconds ahead of compatriot Ivan Basso and one minute 19 ahead of Spain's Jose Gutierrez.
Thanks to his second place Basso extended his race lead to more than three minutes.
Tomorrow's 223-km 14th stage is from Aosta to Domodossola.
