Deignan eighth in Paris-Corrèze

Just under a week after he placed seventh in the Tour de la Région Wallonne, talented young Irishman Philip Deignan today picked up another strong result when he ended the three-day Paris-Corrèze event in eighth overall.

The 21-year-old first year professional placed 20th on the final stage, a 197.7 kilometre race from Ussel to Chaumeil.

He was 54 seconds behind stage winner and final overall victor Frédéric Finot of the Française des Jeux team.

Deignan had started the stage sixth in the general classification, level on time with race leader Dimitriy Fofonov (Cofidis), but Finot and Christophe Le Mével both got enough of a gap before the line to jump to the top of the overall standings.

Deignan consequently slipped two places to eighth overall.

His Ag2R-Prévoyance team will nevertheless be delighted with the Irishman's showing in the 2.1 ranked racing, especially as it comes so soon after his strong Tour de la Région Wallonne ride.

Meanwhile his team-mate Mark Scanlon and former Irish international Nicolas Roche were also in action today.

The former finished 31st on stage two of the Tour of Denmark and is now 47th overall. Roche, son of 1987 Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, placed 51st in yesterday's prologue, came home as part of the main bunch today and is now 52nd overall in the ProTour event.
