Italian Lorenzo Bernucci of the Fassa Bortolo team won the 199km sixth stage of the Tour de France from Troyes to Nancy.
Bernucci came over the finish line just 0.03sec ahead of T-Mobile's Alexandre Vinokourov, who had managed to escape crashing into Frenchman Christophe Mengin on the final corner before the home straight.
Behind the 31-year-old Kazakh, a massive pile-up ensued, taking down several riders - all of whom practically crashed into Mengin who was lying on the ground.
None of the contenders for the yellow jersey were harmed, however, Vinokourov took bonus seconds at the finish and is now second in the general classification 53secs behind Lance Armstrong.
