Simoni wins the Giro d'Italia

Italian Gilberto Simoni of the Saeco team has won the Tour of Italy cycling race for the second time.

Simoni, 31, winner in 2001, keeps the title in home hands for the seventh straight year.

Simoni was forced to leave the 2002 Giro in disgrace after two separate positive tests for cocaine.

He was later cleared of doping by the Italian Cycling Federation, who accepted his defence that the drug was present in some coca sweets his aunt had given him after a trip to South America.

The Italian climb specialist built up a lead of over seven minutes on compatriot Stefano Garzelli, with Yaroslav Popovych of the Ukraine a further five seconds behind.

Ukrainian Serhiy Honchar, of De Nardi, won the 21st and final stage, a 33km time-trial, coming in 19 seconds ahead of Italian Marzio Bruseghin with Spaniard Aitor Gonzalez a further second off the pace.
