Former national champion David McCann has been hit with a six-month ban following a positive test for the substance Norandrosterone. The Volksbank Ideal professional was subjected to a random urine during the Tour of Austria, which returned a reading above the permitted level of the substance.
Analysis of McCann's B sample showed a similar result and he was given
a six month suspension and fined 2000 Swiss Francs during a Cycling
Ireland hearing on August 29th. Excluding the months during the winter
off season, the sanction means that he will be unable to compete until
May 29th of next year.
Contacted yesterday, McCann insisted that he had never knowingly taken a
banned substance. He is considering lodging an appeal with the Court
for Arbitration in Sport in Lausanne.
