Laurence Roche rode to victory in the Dunboyne three-day race yesterday after taking the event by 9 seconds from Killorglin's Barry Woods. Roche won the yellow jersey in Saturday's 67-mile stage and on the final day of the race, he was part of a ten-strong breakaway group who lead the 75 mile final stage.
Finishing in an impressive time, it was Roche's biggest win for several seasons. The delighted rider said: "It was going to be hard to defend the jersey so I decided that the best way to do it would be to attack today. A group went clear at the start and once I saw that Sean Bracken was in it, I knew that he would get the riders to work well together. I was able to get across to the group and from there we all rode hard together."
The final result saw Roche finish take the top position in 7 hours, 49 mins and 40 secs. Second was Barry Woods Woods at 9 secs later followed by Bracken at 22 secs.
