French deputy public prosecutor, Gerald Vinsonneau, today demanded the dropping of charges against former Festina rider Richard Virenque for complicity in his team's administration of doping products. Virenque finally admitted doping before the tribunal last month after denying it for two years, and Vinsonneau said that under the interpretation of the law the fact that rider used drugs meant that he could not be held responsible for their traffic.
Vinsonneau requested a 14-month suspended prison sentence and a 20,000 Franc fine against former Festina team masseur, Willy Voet, and an 18-month suspended sentence and a 50,000 Franc fine against former team sporting director, Bruno Roussel.
