Ireland beat the West Indies on the DLS method as rain called a halt to proceedings with the hosts chasing 142 for victory, on 99 for five after 14.1 overs in the Women's Tri-Nations encounter in Clontarf.

At the start of the 15th over, Louise Little hit a ball for four which put Ireland one run ahead on DLS (the method to determine weather-affected games) before the heavens opened.

The teams didn't reappear due to the inclement weather conditions as the home side were declared winners, helped by a brilliant 71 not out from 46 deliveries from captain Orla Prendergast.

It marks Ireland's first win over the West Indies in Women's T20Is, who now join today's visitors at the top of the standings, a series which also features Pakistan.

The West Indies decided to bat having won the toss and Ireland made changes to their starting 11 with the in-form Amy Hunter, who scored her sixth T20I half-century in the win over Pakistan on Sunday rested, with Christine Coulter Reilly taking over from Hunter behind the stumps.

Play got under way at its scheduled time despite the threat of rain at Castle Avenue and there was immediate success for the home side as Windies captain Hayley Matthews perished in the third over, an early wicket for bowler Ava Canning.

Matthew's fellow opener Deandra Dottin followed soon after for 12 with Leah Paul taking a terrific low diving catch at square cover reducing the visitors to 21 for 2 in the fourth over.

And two became three when wicket keeper Reilly took another diving catch to get rid of Qiana Joseph with the score on 33 for 3 in the fifth over, Canning’s second wicket.

Jahzara Claxton was run out for 11 in the over reducing the West Indies to 49 for four in the ninth over, but Shemaine Campbelle made 21 and Jannillea Glasgow contributed 36 with a partnership of 46 as the Windies eventually made 141 for 8 off their 20 overs.

In reply, Ireland suffered the loss of openers Alana Dalzell and Arlene Kelly, elevated up the order, in only the first over with Ireland three for two, both wickets to Shawnisha Hector.

Those early dismissals brought together Rebecca Stokell and stand-in captain Orla Prendergast with the pair adding 57 runs for the third wicket before Stokell fell for 12 in the ninth over with Ireland in 60 for 3.

Paul (1) and Alice Tector (2) departed not long after Stokell’s dismissal with Ireland losing three wickets for just five runs, putting a break on their side’s reply.

Prendergast though continued to lead from the front, going past 50 for the eleventh time for her country.

Little hit the winning four as Ireland reached 99 for 5 when the rains came and the result was declared in favour of the hosts.

The West Indies play Pakistan on Wednesday with Ireland's final match against Pakistan on Thursday.
