Belfast has been confirmed as one of the first three franchise cities that will make up the new European T20 Premier League (ETPL).

Last year, the International Cricket Council (ICC) formally sanctioned the creation of a new annual T20 franchise tournament that would have Irish involvement.

The tournament will be be a partnership between Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.

While it had been due to kick off in summer 2025, the tournament was postponed and it is now slated to begin in late August this year.

On Tuesday, at an international press conference in Sydney, Australia, the first three franchise cities were announced with Belfast confirmed alongside Amsterdam and Edinburgh.

The Belfast franchise will be co-owned by Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and businessman Rohan Lund.

"I am thrilled to be involved with the Irish Wolves, where we will build a culture of fun, family and playing without fear," said Maxwell.

"The Irish people love their sport and Cricket Ireland have made huge strides in expanding the game over the last two decades. The Wolves and the European T20 Premier League will accelerate that growth and I feel super proud to be leading the franchise in its inaugural year."
