Ireland were thrashed by an innings and 47 runs in the first Test by Bangladesh in Sylhet.
Resuming on 86 for five on the fourth morning, Ireland needed another 215 runs just to make their hosts bat again after Bangladesh had racked up an imposing 587 for eight declared.
Andy McBrine made 52, sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 66 with captain Andy Balbirnie (38), while Jordan Neill (36) and Barry McCarthy (25) put on 54 for the ninth wicket but Ireland were all out for 254.
Hasan Murad claimed four for 60 while fellow slow left-armer Taijul Islam took three for 84 as Bangladesh went 1-0 up in the two-match series.
The second Test begins in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Skipper Balbirnie admitted his side showed glimpses of quality but lacked consistency.
"That was tough cricket for us," Balbirnie
"That was tough cricket for us," he added. "I think Bangladesh were just better than us in every aspect of the game. They showed us how to get a big first-inning score and we were always on the back foot.
"We're aware of how good a team Bangladesh are in their own conditions. Skills-wise, they're really good and our players are always going to show fight.
"From a skill point of view, we have to get to them as quick as possible. And that will come by just playing as much matches as we can in these conditions that are testing.
"So, I'm really proud of the way we've gone about it the last four days, but certainly we want to be better going into the next match."
Both sides now move to Dhaka for the second Test which starts on 19 November.
