Ireland plunged further into trouble on day three of their first Test against Bangladesh, trailing by 215 runs and on the brink of defeat in Sylhet.

Bangladesh resumed their first innings on 338 for one, but Ireland found an early breakthrough to dismiss Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 171 before Mominul Haque fell for 82.

The hosts continued to control the match, with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring a century alongside Litton Das' contribution of 60, and Matthew Humphreys was pick of the bowlers, taking five wickets for 170 runs as Bangladesh declared on 587 for eight, their third-highest Test innings.

However, the visitors faced an early blow in their second innings as Cade Carmichael was bowled for just five runs in the fourth over and Paul Stirling was the next to fall for 43 after being run out.

Their response took another twist when Harry Tector was trapped lbw by Taijul Islam before Hasan Murad struck in quick succession to dismiss Curtis Campher and Lorcan Tucker for just single figures, leaving Ireland 86 for five at close.
