Mahmudul Hasan Joy's unbeaten 169 helped put Bangladesh in a commanding position after day two of the first Test against Ireland in Sylhet.
After Ireland were bowled out for 286 on the second morning, Mahmudul put the tourists’ bowlers to the sword as Bangladesh closed on 338 for one, a 52-run lead with nine wickets remaining.
Mahmudul and fellow opener Shadman Islam (80) put on 168 for the first wicket at the Sylhet Stadium and Mominul Haque’s unbeaten 80 then helped add another 170 runs without further loss before the close.
Matthew Humphreys took Ireland’s solitary wicket, with Shadman caught behind by Lorcan Tucker in the 42nd over.
Ireland had resumed on 270 for eight, but opener Paul Stirling failed to add to his overnight 60 and the tourists were only able to add another 16 runs.
Meaanwhile, Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct yesterday.
Rana was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match."
The incident occurred in the 27th over of Ireland’s innings, when he fielded the ball on his follow-through and threw it inappropriately, hitting batter Cade Carmichael’s pads even though the batter had not moved out of the crease.
Rana accepted the sanction, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing.
The first of two full (five-day) Tests continues tomorrow.
