Ahead of Ireland’s One Day International against England in May, Max Sorensen remembers the last times the sides met as his ‘favourite’ appearance in a green shirt.
Although Ireland lost by six wickets with seven overs to spare in Malahide in 2013, it was Sorensen's debut and he said: “I remember the last time we played England here, it was my favourite game that I’ve played in an Irish shirt.
“It was obviously my debut, but the atmosphere was absolutely unreal.
“We had clear blue skies – 26 degrees, which you don’t get in Ireland! And the place was just buzzing the whole day. It was an unreal occasion.”
The 29-year-old South African-born player, who was a late call up to the Irish squad for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand due to an injury to Tim Murtagh, said it was tough due to his own injury problem, which is improving by the day.
Sorensen added: “It’s tough obviously coming in late, an emotional roller coaster, but I settled back into the squad and got back to some sort of fitness.
“I’ve still got progress to make but every day that I’m training is good. It takes time to get over these things but I’m happy where I am.
“I’m happy with the World Cup. I didn’t expect to play obviously, but then got the opportunities, I got three games, so am really chuffed and happy with the way I played and performed.”
Sorensen also had words of praise for outgoing coach Phil Simmons, saying: “Phil is a charismatic, great guy. Everyone will miss him.”
Ireland play England on Friday 8 May in Malahide, where 10,000 fans are expected.
