Ireland have a bright and exciting future ahead on the cricket pitch, according to all-rounder Kevin O’Brien.

Although they failed to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals, Ireland produced some memorable moments in narrow wins over three pool opponents, ultimately falling short on run rate with the same amount of points as West Indies.

Speaking to RTÉ, O’Brien said he was confident about the future.

“We’ve got some very exciting young players coming through," O'Brien said. "The likes of Andrew Balbirnie had a wonderful tournament with the bat; Andy McBrine with the ball, he bowled very consistently.

“[There are] exciting times ahead, we’ve just got to rest up now for the next couple of weeks and come back hard for the 8 May game against England.”

Despite the disappointment of returning early from Australia and New Zealand, Ed Joyce was also upbeat about their campaign.

He said: “If you told us going out there we’d beat the West Indies, Zimbabwe and UAE and perform pretty well in the other three games, we’d probably have taken that and thought we’d get through to a quarter-final as well so it’s obviously disappointing not to get through to that.

“But I thought we gave everything we could and I thought we performed pretty well out there.”
