The 2014 Winter Olympics take place in Sochi, Russia from 7-16 February, and RTÉ News Now will have the best of the action as athletes from over 90 countries, including Ireland, bid for glory in the 98 events over 15 winter sport disciplines.

The action starts at 4pm on Friday 7 February with Jimmy Magee as your host for live coverage of the Opening Ceremony as the nations assemble in the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Each night of competition RTÉ News Now will have a one hour highlights programme with the best of all the day’s action, and Jimmy Magee will be joined by George Hamilton on Sunday 23 February for live coverage of the Closing ceremony.

Ireland is represented by a five-strong team with Conor Lyne and Florence Bell taking part in the Alpine Skiing, Jan Rossiter competing in Cross Country Skiing, Seán Greenwood going in the Skeleton and Seamus O’Connor participating in the Snowboarding competition.

They will be looking to top the fourth place achieved by Clifton Wrottesley in the Skeleton at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City, which remains the best performance by an Irish athlete at the Winter Games.

You can stay up to date with how the Irish are faring on RTÉ.ie/sport, and on Sports bulletins across RTÉ Television and Radio, as the team seek to secure a first Winter Olympics medal for the country.

RTÉ News Now is available on Saorview, UPC Channel 200, the RTÉ News Now App for mobile and tablet, and online at RTÉ.ie/News and the RTÉ Player. Please note that coverage of the Winter Olympics is restricted to Ireland only.
