Former Ireland coach Adrian Birrell has been named to lead England's Under-19 team during this summer's series against Sri Lanka Under-19s.

The 49-year-old led Ireland for five years from 2002 and enjoyed his most notable success when leading the side to the Super Eight stage of the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.

‘I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity to coach the England Under 19's,’ Birrell said.

‘The challenge of the Sri Lanka tour excites me as well as the chance to use my knowledge and experience to maximise potential and produce England players of the future.’

England Under-19s will play their Sri Lanka counterparts in two 'Tests' as well as five one-day and two Twenty20 matches, starting from late July.
