Worcestershire posted a 52-run win over Ireland in Belfast in their Group A Friends Provident Trophy clash.

After rain delayed the start, the innings were reduced to 33 overs and Worcestershire made 180 for eight, with Steve Davies top scoring with 47 from 56 balls. No Worcestershire batsman made it over the 50 mark but there were a number of good sized contributions from across the team and they made their runs quickly.

Despite the modest target, Ireland only managed 128 for nine from their allotted overs with Paul Stirling (51) the only batsman offering significant resistance. A slow rate of scoring saw realistic chances of reaching the target slip away before their innings had reached the midway point.

Kyle McCallan (24) and John Mooney (22) reached reasonable totals in the middle order but by the time they came in, the game had moved out of Ireland's reach.

Scotland suffered an even heavier defeat in Group B, losing by 162 runs to Middlesex at Lord's.

Openers Billy Godleman (82) and Phillip Hughes (74) sent Middlesex on their way to 302 for seven and the Scots then collapsed to 140 all out inside 38 overs in reply.

Kyle Coetzer added 45 off 59 balls and opener Gavin Hamilton notched 30 but they were insufficiently supported.
