South Africa deny IPL 'speculation'

Reports the Indian Premier League could be played in South Africa are 'only media speculation', according to a spokesman for Cricket South Africa.

But the future of this year's tournament, which has been uncertain since the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team in Pakistan this month, should become clearer after a Board of Control for Cricket in India meeting tomorrow.

Security fears have been exacerbated by the upcoming general elections in India, which clash with the tournament and have prompted the home ministry to ask organisers to reschedule.

Although Lalit Modi, IPL commissioner and vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has continually stated the league will go ahead in the country, reports yesterday surfaced it could be shifted to South Africa.

However, CSA spokesman Michael Owen-Smith today told PA Sport: 'At the moment there's only media speculation. I am not in a position to give you anything concrete.

'I see there's a BCCI meeting tomorrow to decide on the future of the tournament.

'The only comment Cricket South Africa have made so far is that we're not aware of anything that's going on.'

Kevin Pietersen, who was bought at this year's auction by the Bangalore Royal Challengers, was among the players who subsequently expressed doubts about playing in India.

Should any of the world's big stars decide not to play, its profile would inevitably suffer. But any move would represent a climbdown for Modi, who has been bullish in his insistence the tournament will remain in India.

Earlier this month he was quoted as saying: 'Reports of moving venues out of India are rubbish. IPL is a domestic tournament.'

Scheduling of the tournament has proved difficult, because its current dates clash with general elections.

That has created concerns about the ability of the paramilitary to provide adequate security for both events, and organisers have been asked by the home ministry to change their dates.

General elections in India are spread over five days between 16 April and 13 May, cutting significantly into the IPL's schedule which runs from 10 April to 24 May.

A two-hour meeting on Monday between IPL and ministry officials failed to resolve the issue.
