Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers both hit centuries and Makhaya Ntini took four wickets as South Africa claimed a 46-run victory over Pakistan in the first one-day international in Lahore.

Set 295 to win by the tourists, Pakistan were in serious trouble at 55 for four before Mohammad Yousuf (53) steadied the ship and Shahid Afridi (47) hit out with typical vigour.

However, it was not enough as they were skittled out for 249.

The Proteas made a flying start to their innings and put on a first-wicket stand of 85, but that was halted in the 14th over when Graeme Smith (34) was run out following a mix-up with fellow-opener Gibbs.

Pakistan struck again just three overs later, with Jacques Kallis caught and bowled by Shahid Afridi for eight to leave the visitors on 97 for two.

De Villiers then came to the crease and he and Gibbs put on 137 before the latter fell to the second run out of the day, although the opener was unlucky as he slipped when attempting a second to leave him well short and out for 102.

Justin Kemp (one) faced just five balls before Sohail Tanvir trapped him leg before wicket, but South Africa put on a late charge and smashed 21 off the 47th over before Mark Boucher (14) put an Iftikhar Anjum delivery down Younis Kahn's throat at long on with the final ball of the penultimate over.

De Villiers finished unbeaten on 103.

Pakistan struggled to get going in reply and saw Imran Nazir (16), Younis Kahn (12) and Mohammad Hafeez (six) all caught off the bowling of Ntini in the first eight overs as they struggled to 37 for three.

Shoaib Malik was next to fall, caught by Gibbs off Ntini at extra cover before Yousuf came in to add 53 off 75 balls although Misbah ul-Haq (20) was caught by Boucher off Charl Langeveldt to leave Pakistan 92 for five.

Kamran Akmal then entered the fray and he and Yousuf built the hosts' best partnership of 60 before Yousuf was caught by Smith off Kallis.

That brought Afridi to the crease and he fired off 47 in 26 balls while Akmal (35) was clean bowled by Kallis and Sohail Tanvir (26) was given similar treatment by Langeveldt.

Afridi's cameo was ended when he was caught by De Villiers off Albie Morkel and Anjum was run out for nine to give South Africa the win with 21 balls to spare.
