President Mary McAleese telephoned the captain fo the Irish cricket team Trent Johnston from Rome this evening to congratulate the team on getting into the last eight and to wish them luck in their match tomorrow.
The president also offered her sympathies on the death of the former president and chairman of the Irish Cricket Union, Bob Kerr. She said 'Bob Kerr was a great champion of Irish cricket.'
The president went on to say how difficult it must have been for the team to deal with the death of the Pakistani cricket coach on the night after the Irish victory over Pakistan.
She said the team had had to deal with a double tragedy, that the whole country is behind them and proud of them and she urged them to give Bob Kerr a great send off in the match tomorrow.
