South Africa pull out of Triangular Series

South Africa have withdrawn from the triangular one-day series in Colombo over fears about safety, Sri Lanka Cricket have confirmed.

The Proteas had vowed to pull out of the tournament if the hosts could not guarantee player safety following Monday's bomb blast in Colombo, which left a number of people dead and many more injured.

India and Sri Lanka are the other two teams playing in the triangular series.

The explosion in the Sri Lankan capital occurred near the South African and Indian team hotels.

During their time on tour, the Proteas have passed the location where the bomb went off at least once a day on their way to the SSC or Premadasa Stadium for matches or training.

Indian cricket chiefs insisted on Tuesday their national team would not withdraw from the tournament but Cricket South Africa wanted reassurances about security in the area before agreeing to play any further matches.

The organisation's general manager for cricket affairs, Brian Basson, told SuperCricket on Tuesday: 'I would like to have guarantees that our players will be safe and if I don't get those guarantees, I will have no hesitation in withdrawing the squad from Sri Lanka.'

The triangular tournament had not even got under way.

The opening match between hosts Sri Lanka and South Africa, which had been due to start on Monday, was abandoned because of bad weather.

The fixture was put back 24 hours to Tuesday but the bomb blast led to the match being called off for safety reasons, before being rescheduled for August 29.

Wednesday's game between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo was also put back a day because of wet outfield conditions.
