Marianne Timmer from the Netherlands returned to the top after eight years with a surprise victory in the women's 1000m speed skating at the Turin Winter Olympics on Sunday.

Timmer, a double 1998 Olympic champion in the 1,000 and 1,500 at the Nagano Olympics, was bitterly disappointed to be disqualified from the Turin Games in the 500m event earlier this week with a second false start.

Timmer's race of 1:16.05 was enough to give her the top spot, four hundredths of a second ahead of Canadian Cindy Klassen and six hundredths over Anni Friesinger of Germany, who got the bronze medal.
