Akmal takes Indian hat-trick

A century from Kamran Akmal helped Pakistan recover from a precarious position on day one of the third Test with India to reach 218 for seven at tea.

A first-over hat-trick from Irfan Pathan had stunned the hosts, who were at one stage reduced to an embarrassing 39 for six.

But an unbeaten 101 from wicketkeeper Akmal, plus 45 from Abdul Razzaq, helped get Pakistan's challenge back on track.

Having won the toss, India elected to field and Pathan's impact was immediate.

With no runs on the board, opener Salman Butt lasted just three balls before poking a Pathan delivery to Rahul Dravid at first slip.

Younis Khan's stay at the crease was even briefer with Pathan's next delivery rapping him on the pads, and the Indian seamer then secured his hat-trick by clean bowling Mohammad Yousuf.

The unprecedented collapse continued with Faisal Iqbal at least making five runs before being trapped leg before wicket by Zaheer Khan.

Shahid Afridi also went cheaply for 10, misreading an inswinger from Zaheer which removed his leg stump, while Rudra Singh's dismissal of Imran Farhat (22) left Pakistan on an embarrassing 39 for six.

The arrival of Akmal and Razzaq finally steadied the ship for Pakistan, who progressed to 101 for six at lunch, and the duo continued to frustrate the Indian attack with Akmal reaching his third Test 50 shortly after the interval.

Razzaq also appeared to be heading for his half century but fell five runs short when Singh trapped the Pakistan man lbw to break the partnership.

But Akmal, with the assistance of Shoaib Akhtar (31 not out), pushed on to reach his fourth Test century five balls before tea as Pakistan looked to set a competitive first-innings total.
