Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood led an England fight back today as the tourists battled to save the third and final test against Pakistan.

The pair took England to 84 for two at tea on the fourth day but they still trail Pakistan by 264 runs after the home side declared their first innings on 636 for eight just before lunch.

Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar got rid of Marcus Trescothick (0) and Michael Vaughan (13) to reduce the visitors to 30 for two before Bell, who is batting on 42, and Collingwood, who has made 22, stopped the rot.

The Pakistan innings included Mohammad Yousuf's 223, 154 from Kamran Akmal and 97 from captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who became the 14th batsman to score more than 8,000 test runs.

Shoaib outfoxed Vaughan with a slower full toss that the England captain hit back to the bowler after trapping Trescothick lbw in the one over possible before lunch.

A drawn match will still give Pakistan the series by 1-0. However, forcing a draw would be a boost to England’s morale after being outclassed by the home side in the match so far.
