England captain Michael Vaughan was today at the centre of an Ashes injury scare after being hit on the elbow during practice.

Vaughan received the blow while batting in the nets in preparation for the second Test at Edgbaston and was taken to a local hospital for an X-ray.

The 30-year-old had been in high spirits after hitting a one-day century for Yorkshire against Derbyshire on Sunday having struggled with bat in the opening Test defeat at Lord's.

England will assess the captain's condition after studying the results of the X-ray.
