Sri Lankan cricket star Sanath Jayasuriya has revealed his mother was lucky to be alive after being seriously injured by the tsunamis that have devastated the island.
The veteran all-rounder said his 60-year-old mother, Breeda, was caught by the tidal waves while she was on her weekly trip to buy vegetables on the beach at Matara, about 80 miles south of the capital Colombo.
He said: "It was a sort of miracle. Every Sunday, she goes to the beach front to buy fresh vegetables and she was caught in the tidal waves. My mother was badly injured by the tsunami, but thankfully she managed to survive and, though she is still under medication, is out of danger."
The Sunday market was washed away shortly after his mother was rescued.
